The end of turkey season sparks the end of my bowhunting seasons until September, but that doesn't mean my archery equipment gets put on the shelf. The dog days of summer bring about one of my favorite past times, bowfishing. As a bowhunter you are already equipped with the most important piece of equipment, a bow. The rest of the gear is simple, a reel and fishing arrow, which will only cost you as much as you want to spend, but for beginners hand wound reels or spincast reels designed for bowfishing are a pretty inexpensive way to go. Carp are probably the most sought after fish for bowfishermen and can be found in nearly every body of water in the U.S. They are generally easy to find as they spend lots of time in calm, shallow backwaters of lakes and ponds, and they are fairly easy to sneak up whether you are wading in the water, or in a boat. There are also many other species of fish that are legal bowfishing quarry, but check your state laws first to make sure you know what is legal game and what isn't. So if you are looking for a new hobby, or just a way to break the monotony of those hot summer days, grab your bow and head to the lake to try it for yourself.
